Taxonomy of Ceramic Design practice

Employment opportunities encompass manufacturing; freelance work and consultancy; marketing, retail and PR; community arts; and other design fields. The course provides a well-developed understanding of materials coupled with a strong design background and high degree of professional awareness. This will benefit those graduates who wish to broaden their experience into other design practices. Design roles for BA Ceramic Design graduates are extremely wide ranging.

They can include:
Designer or Design Manager for a manufacturer: producing prototypes for both shape and surface design either in their innovation or interpretation commissioning work from others.

Self-employment: working as a designer, maker or entrepreneur. This includes working as a small-scale designer for batch or limited production, the ceramist producing commissioned one-off vessels or site-specific projects.

Design consultation: working with a design group or as a freelance consultant, as a designer or model maker.

Marketing and Promotion: working as a buyer for a company raising awareness of ceramics in the media.

Working in the community: teaching, ceramicist residencies and arts management.
