Craft of Design

The Craft of Design is a departmental based research project, which supports the exploration of three dimensional thinking through the making of maquettes or early ones. The principal is that in realising an idea in an immediate if rudimentary form you are translating a notion, into a reality.

We believe 3D design to be a truly haptic experience, in that the design of a three dimensional form cannot be fully resolved without handling the physical incarnation of the design. `

It is our position that the maquette is the essence of the final object. It contains the genetic code of the design process showing the evolution of an idea from the concept to reality.

It is something that designer Constantin Boym described as a disappearing craft when we interviewed him for an Article for Blueprint magazine which can be downloaded below.
